Bringing Quality Care Closer to You

Thank you for viewing PIH Health’s Fiscal Year 2018 Annual Report. We are pleased to share the changes and expansions that have taken place over the past 12 months in support of community wellness. At PIH Health, our priority is always “Patients First,” and our goal is to offer the very best in healthcare. This past year we focused on bringing additional care sites and services into local neighborhoods, and we celebrated many accolades and milestones, while serving the more than 2.1 million residents in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

PIH Health Hospital - Downey marked five years as an integral part of PIH Health in October 2018. In keeping with our promise to improve the Downey facility, many units underwent seismic retrofitting to meet the highest earthquake standards. We have also updated our technological and communication systems to support the hospital’s electronic records, which boosts efficiency and security in handling sensitive healthcare information. Additionally, we continue our expansion of the Emergency Department, which will accommodate more patients and feature advanced technology.

Also in 2018, we expanded our Urgent Care Centers (UCC), opening locations in Montebello and La Habra. Keeping you and your family healthy is our top priority. A new feature added to our website, PIHHealth.org, enables patients to preview UCC wait times, which will help get them in front of a provider sooner.

We added a pharmacy within our Bloomfield Medical Office Building located in Santa Fe Springs, which gives patients the ability to fill their prescriptions after a visit with their primary care doctor, orthopedist, urgent care physician, or neurologist, without leaving the building.

Those with children in the community now have access to the CHOC Children’s Health Center, located within our Whittwood PIH Health Medical Office Building. PIH Health Physicians’ medical group sees more than 45,000 pediatric patients annually, so this new affiliation with CHOC Children’s Health Center allows us to provide easy access to specialized pediatric care within the community.

PIH Health was nationally recognized for Outstanding Patient Experiences by Healthgrades® and received accolades from many other national rating organizations. These types of honors would not be possible without the exceptional physicians, donors, volunteers, and staff, at all levels, who contribute to all that is encompassed in patient care.

As we celebrated the 60th anniversary of our Whittier campus in January 2019, we reflected on all that had been achieved, but we also look forward to the significant promise that the future holds. We will continue to work strategically and passionately to offer the latest in medical advances delivered by knowledgeable and compassionate medical professionals for decades to come.

Thank you to all who entrust us with their and their family’s care throughout all stages of life. We know that in healthcare you have many choices, and we are thankful that you choose us. Here’s to another year of good health.

Highlights

Over the past year much has transpired for PIH Health as an organization. The following are some of the highlights from Fiscal Year 2018.

Community Pharmacy Opened within Bloomfield Medical Office Building in Santa Fe Springs

PIH Health opened its Bloomfield Medical Office Building (MOB) and new Urgent Care Center in Santa Fe Springs in August 2017. The building, located at 12400 Bloomfield Avenue, at the corner of Imperial Highway, now has an on-site community Pharmacy on the first floor lobby, where patients can pick up their prescriptions before leaving. Pharmacy services include immunizations, travel health vaccines, health screenings, medical supplies, and over-the-counter medications.

The Bloomfield MOB’s services include: an Eye Care Center; Family Medicine; Orthopedics and Sports Medicine; Radiology; Urgent Care Center; and a Pharmacy.

New Montebello Urgent Care Center

In August 2018, PIH Health opened an Urgent Care Center (UCC) in Montebello, located at 2205 W. Beverly Blvd. The Urgent Care Center is the newest service to be added to this building, which also houses Family Medicine and Ear, Nose and Throat services.

“Urgent care is a faster and more cost-effective way to access care for non-life threatening emergencies,” said Andrew Zwers, vice president of PIH Health Group Operations. “The opening of the Montebello Urgent Care Center gave us an opportunity to expand the hours of our care for patients who live and work in or near this great community.”

Montebello UCC is one of five PIH Health Urgent Care Centers in the local community. The others are located in the cities of Hacienda Heights, Santa Fe Springs, Whittier, and La Habra, which opened in November 2018.

Social Media Following Grows: Community Receives More Health Information

PIH Health continued to strengthen its social media presence this past year. We boosted our online footprint and offered more posts and information to keep the community healthy, such as: quick access to medical tips; educational facts; patient success stories; food recipes; and introductions to our staff, volunteers, and physicians. Additionally, wellness blogs are published twice a week, where different clinicians comment on an array of topics.

New CHOC Children’s Health Center in PIH Health’s Whittwood Medical Office Building

New CHOC Children’s Health Center in PIH Health’s Whittwood Medical Office Building PIH Health and CHOC Children’s formed an affiliation that will advance pediatric clinical care for children in the communities of Los Angeles and Orange counties. In August 2018, as a part of this affiliation, a CHOC Children’s Health Center opened in PIH Health’s Whittwood Medical Office Building located in Whittier at 15725 E. Whittier Blvd., Suite 300. CHOC’s Health Center provides pediatric neurology, gastroenterology, and cardiology services with more specialties to be added to meet the community’s pediatric care needs.

A CHOC board-certified pediatrician staffs PIH Health’s Whittier Urgent Care Center at 15733 Whittier Blvd., to provide dedicated pediatric care for children in need of urgent medical attention.

Local residents can continue to access their primary care pediatricians and a growing list of pediatric specialists near their homes, while timely transport to CHOC Children’s Hospital is available for neonatal and pediatric patients in need of higher acuity care.

PIH Health Simulation Center

Thanks to the generosity of donors, PIH Health opened its very own Simulation Center in summer 2018.

“The Simulation Center was created to provide a safe learning environment where clinicians can practice procedural skills, inter-professional teamwork, and communication with the goal of increasing patient safety and improving outcomes at PIH Health,” said Director, Simulation Program, Moraima “Mo” Castaneda BSHCM NRP CHSOS.

The center helps lead the way in providing our patients with the safest and best care possible now and in the future. The Simulation Center is open to all PIH Health employees and can be used for a variety of simulation training events. For example, PIH Health Clinical Education uses the center during orientation for newly hired nurses; Environmental Services uses the space to learn proper patient room cleaning techniques; and PIH Health Security uses it for patient and family de-escalation training.

“Simulation affords opportunities to engage in deliberate practice involving repetitive performance and detailed de-briefing after educational sessions. They review, discuss, and learn from what transpired in the simulation training session,” stated Mo.

The Simulation Center staff includes Mo, as its director; program coordinator, and simulation operations specialists.

PIH Health Hospital - Downey Remodeled Entrance and Lobby

After much planning, construction, and hard work, the newly updated Main Entrance and Lobby at PIH Health Hospital - Downey opened in August 2018.

Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Officer Ramona Pratt said, “Our improvement projects at the Downey hospital continue to progress and with each upgrade, our facilities better represent the quality of care that our outstanding physicians and staff provide to our patients each day. I am confident that our new look will enhance our brand and our reputation."

The new lobby features additional seating areas for patients and guests; clear access to the Patient Registration area; a central information desk; and informative digital monitors.

Intercommunity Emergency Medical Group Provides Care at PIH Health Hospital - Downey Emergency Department

In August 2018, PIH Health partnered with Intercommunity Emergency Medical Group (IEMG) to provide patient care at PIH Health Hospital - Downey’s Emergency Department (ED).

IEMG has provided high-quality emergency care at the PIH Health Hospital - Whittier Emergency Department since 1976.  The group's knowledge, expertise, and compassion have been instrumental in building one of the region’s most highly regarded programs for treatment of the most emergent cases, with Whittier being a comprehensive stroke and myocardial infarction receiving hospital and Downey recently receiving designation as a primary stroke receiving hospital. This partnership allows us to utilize the same physician group for both hospital campuses (as we have with the intensivists, hospitalists, radiologists, interventional radiologists and pathologists), thus providing greater standardization of care.

G. Donald Shook MD FACEP is the ED medical director for the Downey campus and IEMG will continue to maintain a medical staff of approximately 30 physicians, all of whom are board-certified or board-eligible in emergency medicine with a majority of these physicians covering both the Whittier and Downey campuses.

PIH Health Hospital - Whittier Ranked “A” Rated Facility by Leapfrog

At PIH Health, we take pride in providing our patients with high-quality care. Our patients' safety and well-being is our highest priority. In recognition of our success, PIH Health Hospital - Whittier was awarded an "A" rating in the Spring 2018 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade.

The Leapfrog Group is an independent, national not-for-profit organization founded more than a decade ago by the nation's leading employers and private healthcare experts. The Leapfrog Group advocates for public access to quality and safety data from all U.S. hospitals.

PIH Health willingly self-monitors and publicly reports data and has continuous quality improvement systems in place. We benchmark our data with nationally recognized agencies and always work aggressively to address opportunities for improvement when appropriate.

PIH Health Summer 2018 Internship Program

In the summer of 2018, PIH Health launched a new internship program where 11 students from local area universities worked for the organization.

The internship program provided valuable learning opportunities for students who are interested in healthcare. It also allowed PIH Health to provide short-term support to staff while gaining fresh perspectives from future generations.

The interns worked throughout the organization, including: Community Health Education, Community Benefit, Volunteer Services (Downey and Whittier), Marketing Communications, Enterprise Supply Chain, PIH Health Physicians Quality Improvement, and the Emergency Department.

At the end of their eight-week tenure, the interns presented their accomplishments to their colleagues and supervisors.

Community Benefit

Navigating Toward a Healthier Future

Community Benefit

It takes a community to create health – and PIH Health is proud to partner with numerous organizations and passionate, committed individuals to create a lasting impact for generations to come.

Our Community Health Needs Assessment highlights where help is needed most. Based on these findings, we prioritized our efforts and investment around food insecurity, homelessness, education, chronic disease, and preventative screenings.

During fiscal year 2017-2018, PIH Health invested just over $118,000 in local nonprofit agencies who work daily to meet these needs. Our Community Support program provides financial support to nonprofit organizations in our service area that are responsive to health needs. These funds often enable the organization to enhance or expand services to better meet the needs of the individuals they serve.

As food insecurity is a significant health need for our primary service area, we worked to deepen our partnership with local food banks. Funding from PIH Health enabled FoodHelp, a local food bank in Downey, to purchase their first food delivery truck.  The food bank previously had to rely on the use of volunteers’ vehicles to pick up donations from the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and other food donors.

We also funded organizations to expand CalFresh (food stamps) enrollment. As a result, Interfaith Food Center, based in Whittier, was able to start offering this vital service to their clients, ensuring access to healthy, nutritious food for local families.

To learn more, PIH Health’s annual Community Benefit Report details the many ways our community benefit investment touches lives in need through financial assistance programs, research, donations, and health management programs.

Foundation

Partnering to Enhance the Health of Our Community

PIH Health Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the sole mission to raise funds through philanthropy to benefit PIH Health and its affiliates. Every dollar raised is reinvested into the communities PIH Health serves through quality healthcare and health-based programs and services.

In Fiscal Year 2018, $3.2 Million was raised in support of PIH Heath’s mission of providing outstanding care for our patients and our community. This year’s fundraising priority was to raise $1 million to support a new Simulation Center. The PIH Health Foundation met this goal, and funds raised will go towards supporting this new Simulation Center, which provides the capability of unlimited, hands-on training for our staff, nurses, residents and physicians in a simulated “real-life” environment. Funds donated to the Foundation last year also supported several other critical programs, including, but not limited to, PIH Health’s James P. Fitzgerald Spiritual Care Services, the Patricia L. Scheifly Breast Health Center, Critical Care Center, and Cancer and Cardiac programs. Donations were also designated to the PIH Health Endowments and unrestricted gifts were used where the needs are greatest.

The PIH Health Foundation would not be successful without the generosity of our donors who partner with us to help give new hope and new life to those who come to us for care. Please refer to the comprehensive donor list below. Your generosity makes a difference in the lives of those we serve.
